Local Government Association calls for urgent boost in child social workers

The Local Government Association (LGA) urges swift measures to bolster the child welfare workforce and enhance staff retention in the upcoming autumn statement.

In order to get 200 former child social workers back into practice, the LGA says the government should provide £500,000 in its forthcoming autumn statement.

This is part of the LGA’s ongoing efforts to “rapidly increase the children’s social worker workforce and retain those currently in post”.

With vacancy rates reaching an all time high of 20% this September, support for a worsening workforce is more needed than ever.

Furthermore, it called upon government officials to enhance support for administrative functions, expand training and supervision resources for professionals, and allocate funding for initiatives and scholarships to facilitate career transitions into social work from other fields.

How can I re register as a social worker?

If you were previously registered with Social Work England then you can rejoin the register here. Please note that if you left the register within the last two years, then you will be asked to provide further information about employment since moving professions, as well as updates on any new healthcare conditions.

Individuals who left the profession within a two to five-year timeframe must furnish proof of dedicating 30 days to refreshing their skills and knowledge within the preceding year. Conversely, for those who have been unregistered for over five years, the obligation extends to 60 days. To learn more, visit the Social Care England website.
