How to thrive as a social worker

Let's navigate the rewarding yet demanding landscape of social work together and discover how you can not only survive but thrive as a social worker.

Remember that learning is an on-going process

Sometimes our creativity can become clouded by the high-pressure environment that is social work. However, it is important to try out different approaches now and again, because social work is complex and new ideas can help improve practice and ultimately produce better outcomes for clients.

Self-care is non-negotiable

Despite sounding like a broken record, we cannot overemphasise how crucial it is to look after yourself! How can you expect to care for others if you are not caring for yourself? Make sure you take time each day to do something you find relaxing, whether that’s going for a long walk, cooking a comfort meal or having a little boogy in the living room…

Be there for your colleagues

Solidarity is key when it comes to social work - and while it can be easy to neglect your team in stressful enviroments, this is actually the worst thing you can do. Coming together as a team means you can solve problems easier and support one another during tough times. Like in any line of work, trying to tackle everything alone will only lead to burnout.

Don’t be too hard on yourself

Sadly, imposter syndrome is very common amongst social workers due to the demanding nature of the role. This can easily lead to a lack of motivation and a constantly comparing yourself to your colleagues. When you feel yourself falling down this rabbit hole, take a step back and remind yourself of all the fantastic things you’ve achieved that week and remember that you are helping make positive change.
