How are local authorities tackling digital exclusion?

Access to fixed broadband is 15% lower in England’s most deprived areas than in the least deprived, finds new study from the Local Government Association.

Those left in what is being dubbed the ‘broadband slow lane’ risk missing out on job opportunities, with 96% of employers using LinkedIn to locate talent.

Additional research found a close correlation between internet access and economic activity. Areas with the fastest broadband also typically had the best mobile coverage.

Furthermore, the cost of living crisis saw up to one million people disconnecting their broadband in the last year, with those on universal credit hit the hardest, according to data from Citizens Advice.

In a bid to mitigate digital exclusion, the LGA is urging the government to appoint a dedicated Digital Exclusion minister whose role would focus on closing the digital gap between communities across the country.

The organisation has also highlighted the need for a refreshed digital strategy, which takes into account the digital growth that has taken place over the last decade, as well as factoring in the current economic climate.

Cllr Mark Hawthorne, Digital Connectivity spokesperson for the LGA, said: “The Government has pledged to give every home and business access to the fastest possible broadband, but this report demonstrates the digital divide is still holding some back in the broadband slow lane.

“We need a complete refresh of the current digital inclusion strategy, which is nearly a decade old, with a minister in charge to oversee it and make sure no one is left behind.

“Reliable access to high-quality fixed and mobile broadband means that you can boost your skills, grow a business and enhance your job prospects, while also playing a vital role in reducing social isolation by keeping people in touch with family and friends.

“Councils want to make sure that, no matter which part of the country you live in or your circumstances, everyone can experience the transformational benefits that fast internet access can bring.”

Here at Imperium Solutions, we believe everyone should have equal job opportunities, which in 21st century Britain also means having internet access. We look forward to seeing next steps from the UK government and local authorities to close the digital gap.
