A guide to writing the perfect social worker CV

1.Personal statement


Utilise this space to summarise yourself and your experience. If the job pertains to a specific field, be sure to mention it so that the employer immediately recognizes how your skills align with the requirements. Include details like notice period and relevant keywords from the job description.


2. Qualifications and registrations


List all pertinent qualifications, such as HCPC registration, ASYE, etc.


3. Training and CPD


Highlight relevant training courses and extended learning experiences.


4. DBS check


Confirm your up-to-date DBS check by providing the date of issue and/or the check number.


5. Employment history


Always list your employment history starting with the most recent position. This provides a clear overview of your latest experience, showcasing career development and promotions.

- Dates (from and to)

- Role description followed by key responsibilities (utilise keywords from the job description)


Gaps in employment


Address any gaps in employment by working through your career, providing dates and reasons (e.g., caring for family, career break to travel).


Achievements


Bullet noteworthy awards, accreditations, or significant experiences in your career.


References


Offer two references, with one being your most recent employer. If you prefer them not to be contacted until after securing your next role, make this clear to your prospective employer.


The presentation


- Choose a professional font like Times New Roman, Calibri, or Tahoma.

- Opt for a suitable font size (around 11 or 12) for readability.

- Limit your CV to a maximum of 2 pages.

- Consider a skills or qualifications tab for organisation.

- Use bullet points for easy reading.

- Keep the layout neat with breaks between sections.

- Omit a photo or address; location and travel distance are sufficient.


Content – the breakdown


- Include only relevant information.

- Tailor your CV for each application, emphasising required skills.

- Be truthful; avoid exaggeration or false information.

- If roles are similar, focus on unique contributions to each position.


Language


- Avoid jargon.

- Spell-check and grammar-check thoroughly.

- Proofread multiple times before sending.
